A Chico family perished when their homemade plane crashed and burned shortly after takeoff from a small airport on San Juan Island in Washington state. The San Juan County sheriff’s office identified the victims as Dr. Scott Kastner, 36, his wife Rebecca, also 36, and their 2-year-old son Benjamin. The family was riding in a two-seat, single-engine plane known as a Glassaire, which can be assembled by the owner. The plane had just lifted off from the Roche Harbor Airport when it veered to one side and crashed into trees. Witnesses said they heard the plane’s engine sputter shortly before it crashed.
