Driesell Might Be Asked to Resign
Coach Lefty Driesell will be asked to resign as basketball coach at the University of Maryland if he is indicted in the cocaine-related death of Len Bias, the Baltimore Sun reported Sunday.
The story said the Prince George’s County grand jury has heard evidence that Driesell told assistant coach Oliver Purnell shortly after Bias’ death on June 19 to see that the dormitory room in which he died was cleaned up.
Bias’ roommates Terry Long and David Gregg were indicted last month for possession of cocaine and obstruction of justice for allegedly cleaning up Bias’ room.
The Sun also said University of Maryland Chancellor John Slaughter is looking into Driesell’s financial deals to determine whether they present a conflict of interest. Driesell recently negotiated a $1 million deal with the Reebok shoe company and makes about $50,000 from radio-TV payments.
