Chrisman Wins Final 3 Sailing Races to Take Adam’s Cup Title From Backus

Skipper Catherine Chrisman guided her J-24 sailboat from third place to the title by winning the final three races Sunday in the Adam’s Cup, the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championships off San Diego Bay.

Chrisman, from Charleston, S.C., and her crew (Ann Boyd, Caroline Griffith and Janet Scarborough) were third, trailing leading skipper Heidi Backus and runner-up Carol Buchan after the regatta’s first seven races.

However, Chrisman was able to outmaneuver Backus in all three races Sunday. Chrisman and Backus finished 1-2 in each race Sunday and overall.

Chrisman had 28.5 points and Backus of Vermillion, Ohio, had 35.5 points for second. Buchan of Seattle had 36.5 points for third.

Barbara Beigel, Chesapeake Bay, Md., was fourth with 51.75 points; Carol Robinson, Marina del Rey, was fifth with 52.5 points; Karin Olsen, Chicago, was sixth with 55 points; Becky Wilson, Newport, R.I., was seventh with 62.75 points; Linda McDavitt, Austin, Tex., was eighth with 66 points; Susan Madrigali, San Francisco, was ninth with 76 points, and Ellen LaBanca, Darien, Conn., was 10th with 83 points.
