California Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird’s state campaign headquarters were burglarized, and a “number of items” were missing and files were strewn around, her press secretary said today.

Steven Glazer said that when he arrived at the Mid-Wilshire high-rise at 9 a.m., he discovered “papers and files thrown around the floor” and a “number of items missing.”

Glazer said he had not yet determined exactly what was taken. “But it’s clear things are missing,” he said.

The campaign for Bird’s reconfirmation in the November election has occupied the offices in the building since April.

In addition to calling the Los Angeles police to report the burglary, Glazer called the state police in light of a recent death threat against the chief justice, who faces a reconfirmation vote Nov. 4.

Bird was in her San Francisco office today, Glazer said.
