A man was injured today when 30 to 40 shots were fired from a Van Nuys motel room into the back courtyard of a neighboring apartment building in the 4700 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard, police said.
A Long Beach man who was staying in the room at the Sierra Lodge motel was taken into custody, and a .22-caliber rifle was confiscated. Police said Robert E. Bise Jr., 41, surrendered at 8 a.m., about 30 minutes after the shooting started.
The injured man, Jack Halfon, 43, a tenant at the Rita Apartments, was standing in his bathroom shaving when bullets struck his neck and chest, police said. He was treated at and later released from Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Another shot grazed the shirt pocket of a security guard in the mall parking lot of the Sherman Oaks Galleria, police said. The guard was not injured.
