MUSIC NOTES : CHORALE TO OFFER MOZART PROGRAM

Richard Raub will lead the Orange Coast College Chorale in an all-Mozart program at 8 p.m. Saturday) at the college’s Robert E. Moore Theatre. The chorale, made up of about 85 voices, will sing the unfinished Mass in C minor, K. 427, with solo sopranos Mary Rawcliffe and Jennifer Smith, tenor Thomas Randle and bass LeRoy Villanueva.

Clayton Haslop and James Dunham will be featured soloists in the Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat for Violin and Viola, K. 364. Dunham is a member of the well-respected Sequoia String Quartet.

Also on the program will be “Regina Coeli,” K. 279, sung by the Orange Coast Singers, a chamber-size choral group of about 25 members.

UC Irvine faculty member William van Overeem has fashioned two programs of obscure or rarely performed works by Franz Liszt to be given this weekend at the college’s Fine Arts Concert Hall. One work, the “Consolation No. 1” for piano, is so obscure that it is not even listed in the 21 pages devoted to the composer’s works in the fifth edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, according to van Overeem. The piece was published in 1850 but only recently discovered in the British Museum.

The program at 8 p.m. on Saturday will include various works for solo piano and piano four hands as well as the choral compositions, Psalms 19 and 38 and various motets.

The 8 p.m. program on Sunday will range from chamber works for various combinations of instruments to three symphonic poems, “Les Preludes,” “Orpheus” and “Tasso: lamento e trionfo.”

It seems as though good music isn’t enough these days. The Garden Grove Symphony plans to bring in special effects--lights, lasers, smoke and “anything else it’s legal to bring in,” a press representative says--to enhance its “Space Fantasy” concert Saturday). The program will begin at 8 p.m. at the Don Wash Auditorium in Garden Grove.

Scheduled is Holst’s “The Planets,” Johann Strauss’ “On the Beautiful Blue Danube,” the usual first minute-plus excerpt from Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra,”plus suites derived from the music that John Williams composed for the films “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.”
