The Greek military attache in Lebanon escaped an apparent kidnap attempt Thursday in Muslim West Beirut by speeding away from a pursuing vehicle, embassy officials said.

They said two gunmen tried to kidnap Col. Georges Papaioannou shortly after he and his Lebanese driver crossed from Christian East Beirut to the west in a car with Lebanese license plates.

“I am blond and look like a foreigner,” Papaioannou said later.
