Norwood Advances in Tournament

Top-seeded Mary Norwood of USC went undefeated through two rounds of the Rolex/ITCA Southern California Collegiate Women’s Tennis Championships Thursday at UC Irvine.

Norwood advanced to today’s third round by beating Sondra Mitchell of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-4, and Debbie Ceccato of UCLA, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.

San Diego State’s Anne Moeller, seeded second, also won two straight-set matches, beating Aleai Nava of Nevada Las Vegas, 6-1, 6-0, and Therese Arildsen of Arizona State, 6-4, 6-1.

Third-seeded Carol Coparanis of Arizona State was upset in the first round by Anya Kochoff of USC, 6-3, 6-3. Fifth-seeded Susan Russo of Arizona lost to Lisa Baldas of Arizona State, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round.

In doubles competition, the top-seeded team of Carol Coparanis and Laura Glitz of Arizona State defeated Jody Neuman and Havaja Frljuckic of Cal State Long Beach, 7-5, 6-3.

UC Irvine’s three doubles teams advanced into today’s second round, starting at 2 p.m. The Anteaters’ Dina Trenwith and Haruko Shigekawa defeated Cindy Pineda and Nava, 6-1, 6-2. Kathy Rose and Uma Rao advanced with a three-set victory and Stephanie Rhorer and Courtney Welchsel won in straight sets.

In singles, UCI’s Rose, Rao and Rhorer each won in the first round but lost in the second round. The Anteaters’ Shigekawa and Trenwith lost first-round matches.

Also losing in the first round were Cal State Fullerton’s Andrea Miller, Zoe Ketchilidis and Ellen Mault.
