Southern Section Playoff Highlights : Top-Seeded Muir Defeats Newbury Park, 21-6

Running back Ricky Ervins rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown and caught 6 passes for 66 yards and another score, and quarterback Vince Phillips passed for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead top-seeded Muir High School of Pasadena to a 21-6 win over Newbury Park in a Coastal Conference first-round playoff game Friday night.

The Mustangs, The Times’ fourth-ranked team in the Southern Section, improves to 11-0. Newbury Park finished 5-5-1.

Muir held Newbury Park to 16 yards of total offense in the second half.

La Puente Bishop Amat 35, Westminster 7--Bishop Amat, No. 1 in the Southern Section and the Big Five Conference, improved its record to 11-0 with an easy win as star running back Eric Bieniemy had 122 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries, and quarterback J.R. Phillips completed touchdown passes of 10, 20 and 40 yards. Mazio Royster added 100 yards rushing for the Lancers, including a 51-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Westminster, highly ranked in the preseason polls, concludes its season with a 5-5-1 record.

Temple City 37, Miraleste 13--The Northwestern Conference’s top-seeded team trailed, 13-10, with 7:06 left in the third quarter before scoring four straight touchdowns to win. Tim Vance had two of the late scores on runs of 5 and 40 yards. Temple City is 11-0, Miraleste finished 6-3-2.

La Verne Damien 20, Nogales 12--Running back Eric Henley had touchdown runs of 56 and 58 yards to lead the Spartans (9-2). Nogales finished 8-3.

Antelope Valley 34, Ventura 0--The Coastal Conference’s third-seeded team won easily as running back Eric Mortenson had touchdown runs of 17, 88 and 11 yards. He finished with 147 yards in 15 carries, and inside linebacker Ricky Cage added two interceptions for the Antelopes (9-1-1). Ventura finished 6-4-1.

Crespi Encino 21, Huntington Beach Edison 8--Sophomore Russell White had 195 yards in 9 carries to set Crespi single-season records with 1,801 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The Celts, the fourth-seeded in the Big Five Conference with a 10-1 record, took a 14-0 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter and forced Edison (8-3) away from its strong running game. The Chargers’ Kaleaph Carter, who had 1,030 yards during the regular season, was held to only 53 yards in 15 carries, and Gus Miranda, who had rushed for more than 300 yards in the last four games, lost 4 yards in his only carry.

Edison quarterback Mike Henderson was also ineffective. Despite completing 15 of 37 passes for 192 yards and Edison’s only touchdown, he was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter.

“We started getting a good pass rush on him (Henderson),” Crespi Coach Bill Redell said. “I was rather pleased with our defense tonight.”

Burbank Burroughs 22, Inglewood Morningside 6--The Indians improved to 9-1-1 and advanced to the Northwestern Conference quarterfinals with a little help from Morningside, which fumbled twice in the second half, leading to touchdowns. Morningside finished 6-4.

Canyon Country Canyon 48, Dos Pueblos 6--Ken Sollom completed 12 of 22 passes for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Cowboys (10-1) to the Coastal Conference win. Chad Zeigler caught three of the scoring passes and finished with 7 receptions for a school-record 204 yards. Running back Lance Cross added 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in 11 carries.

Canyon led, 22-6, at halftime and then scored 20 points in the third quarter.

Dos Pueblos finished 5-5-1.

Hacienda Heights Los Altos 46, Covina 10--Quarterback Darren DeSpain completed 16 of 27 passes for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and running back David Crosby had 141 yards rushing to lead Los Altos, the No. 3-seeded team in the Eastern Conference. In all, the Conquerors, had 178 yards rushing and 181 passing, and their defense held Covina to 71 yards rushing.

Los Altos is 10-1, Covina 8-3.

Newhall Hart 38, Arroyo Grande 0--The second-seeded team in the Northwestern Conference, Hart (10-1) got 149 yards in 5 carries, with touchdown runs of 23, 68 and 25, from Andy Iacenda. He also had a scoring reception. Quarterback Jim Bonds, coming off three straight 300-yard performances, completed 11 of 19 for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Arroyo Grande finished 6-5.

Upland 31, Covina Northview 27--Upland (8-3) upset the Eastern Conference’s fourth-seeded team with 229 yards and 3 touchdowns by quarterback Greg Fiorindo, including the game-winner to Tim Albert from 35 yards out with 47 seconds left in the game. The two had hooked up earlier for a 52-yard scoring pass.

Upland is 8-3, Northview 10-1.

Bellflower St. John Bosco 49, Redlands 36--Oscar Meza rushed for four touchdowns, and quarterback Jim Sterner passed for three others, two to Kelvin Means, to lead the Braves, the second-seeded team in the Big Five at 11-0. Redlands (6-5) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but fell short.

Santa Maria 32, Monrovia 20--Santa Maria, rallying from a 13-7 deficit in the third quarter, scored 25 points in the fourth to win. Jackman LeBlanc had 139 yards and 2 touchdowns in 27 carries for the Saints (10-1). Monrovia finished 6-4.
