Weekend Racing at Hollywood Park : Turf Stars to Headline Citation and Matriarch

Some of the nation’s top turf stars will be featured in a pair of weekend races at Hollywood Park.

Today’s $150,000 Citation Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles has drawn a field of eight, headed by Al Mamoon.

Sunday’s $200,000 Matriarch Stakes for fillies and mares at the same distance has drawn a field of 14, headed by Bonne Ille.

Bonne Ille, owned by Arthur Budgett and trained by John Gosden, has won four of six starts since arriving in the United States from France and is coming off a victory Nov. 2 in the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Santa Anita. She will be ridden by turf master Fernando Toro and will carry 123 pounds.

The Matriarch has also attracted:

--Dandar Farms’ Top Corsage, which finished half a length behind Bonne Ille in the Yellow Ribbon and has registered 1986 victories in the Arlington Oaks at Arlington Park, the Louisiana Downs Oaks at Louisiana Downs and the Spinster Stakes at Keeneland. The 3-year-old filly will be ridden by Laffit Pincay and will carry 120 pounds.

--Harbor View Farms’ Outstandingly, a winner of 5 of 12 starts this year with career earnings of $1.38 million. Outstandingly, coming off a third-place finish behind Lady Secret and Fran’s Valentine in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, will be ridden by Gary Stevens, who leads the Hollywood Park jockey standings, and will carry 120 pounds.

--Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Moss’ entry of Aberuschka, to be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, and Solva, with Louis Ortega. Aberuschka won the Midwick Handicap on Breeders’ Cup day at Santa Anita, a race in which Solva was third, and the Palomar Handicap at Del Mar in August. Aberuschka and Solva will carry 123 pounds each. The Citation was expected to lure Skywalker, winner of the $3-million Breeders’ Cup Classic, but Skywalker worked between races Friday and will run in the Turf Cup at Hollywood Park Dec. 7.

Al Mamoon, owned by Bertram Firestone and Edmund Gann, finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile but won the American Handicap over the Hollywood Park turf course earlier this year. The Bobby Frankel-trained colt has career earnings of $1.01 million and will be ridden by Stevens.

The Citation field includes Glaros, winner of the Henry P. Russell Handicap at Santa Anita in early October; Louis Le Grand, winner of the Carlton F. Burke Handicap at Santa Anita in early November, and the remarkable Silveyville, an 8-year-old stallion who has career earnings of $1.24 million and five victories this year, despite spending part of the year in stud.
