A U.S. district judge in Portland, Ore., sentenced the former mayor of Rajneeshpuram, David Berry Knapp, to two years in prison for conspiracy to violate immigration laws. Later, in state court, he was placed on five years’ probation and fined $5,000 on racketeering charges for his role in wiretapping at Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s commune. Knapp, 37, who was called Swami Krishna Deva, had been under the federal witness protection program since he helped develop criminal cases against others in the now-defunct sect. He pleaded guilty to the immigration charges.
