ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Garden Grove Tournament : Bolsa Grande Wins Championship : Small and Cao Lead Matadors to 74-50 Rout of Pacifica

Bolsa Grande High School used a pressing defense and the shooting of forward Joe Small and guard Nam Cao to rout Pacifica Friday night, 74-50, in the championship game of the Garden Grove Tournament at Garden Grove High School.

The Matadors (3-0) took a 25-8 lead in the first quarter as the Mariners could not contain Small or Cao.

Small, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 28 points and Cao added 19. Cao also helped force eight Pacifica turnovers.

“This team is not big,” Bolsa Grande Coach Tony Lipold said. “We put pressure on teams by being quick jumpers. Tonight, we took it to Pacifica right from the beginning.”

Bolsa Grande led, 39-22 at the half and extended its lead to 24 points at 62-38 with 5:27 left when Small made a turnaround jumper.

Alan Bruce led the Mariners (2-1) with 19 points.

In the third-place game:

Western 59, Garden Grove 54--Will Jefferson scored 15 points and Chuck Powell had 14 to lead the Pioneers (2-1). Greg Lorenz scored 16 points for the Argonauts (1-2).

In the consolation championship:

El Dorado 78, Laguna Hills 75--Charles Stevens scored 19 points, Dave Pierce 17, and Brain Cardenas added 14 for the Golden Hawks (2-1).

Pete Colburn scored 13 and teammate Greg Nelson 14 for Laguna Hills (1-2).
