The experimental Voyager aircraft was more than 600 miles past Hawaii today on its westward trip around the world, despite having lost the tips of its 110-foot-long wings.

The plane had a strong tail wind as it headed toward the Philippines, and its crew was in good spirits, spokesman Peter Riva said. Voyager, which took off Sunday from Edwards Air Force Base on a planned 10-day, 27,000-mile global flight, was placed on a course to skirt the northern edge of a tropical storm 180 miles southeast of Guam, Riva said.
