The buyers of Greyhound Lines Inc. and the union representing about 8,000 employees of the nation’s largest intercity bus line reached a tentative labor agreement Sunday.

The accord was reached after five days of discussions with the 25-member Greyhound Council of the Amalgamated Transit Union here, said Fred G. Currey, who heads the investor group that plans to buy the bus line for $350 million.

The proposed pact for drivers, maintenance workers and office personnel will be written into a formal proposal and reviewed by the union on Feb. 2, union President Domenic Sirignano said.

The proposal guarantees job security for Greyhound employees represented by the union, he said.

Last week, union leaders said the rank and file had voted by a 7-1 margin to authorize a strike if necessary but that the union had agreed to extend its expired three-year contract with Greyhound.
