The United States will strengthen its military presence in the Pacific, partly to prepare for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, by stationing an amphibious assault ship in southwestern Japan, the Sankei Shimbun reported Saturday.

The daily newspaper quoted unnamed U.S. and Japanese security sources as saying the United States plans to station the ship, which carries troops, tanks and aircraft, at Sasebo on the west coast of the island of Kyushu, facing the Korean peninsula.

Japan’s Defense Agency declined to comment on the report and U.S. military sources were not immediately available.
