Freddie Banks connected on 9 of 15 shots from three-point range and scored 33 points Saturday as top-ranked Nevada Las Vegas rallied to beat San Jose State, 83-74, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at San Jose.

UNLV improved to 23-1 overall and 11-0 in the PCAA. San Jose fell to 11-11 and 7-6.

The Runnin’ Rebels, badly beaten on the backboards, trailed 60-54 midway through the second half after the Spartans went on an 18-4 rally.

Banks then hit a three-point shot, Gary Graham hit another, and Banks hit one more to put the Rebels ahead, 63-60.

San Jose, which outrebounded UNLV, 48-23, trailed 73-72 with 1:45 to go. Forward Armon Gilliam, who finished with 22 points, then hit a jumper and the Rebels sank six straight field goals to put away the Spartans.

“Obviously I’m glad to get out of here with a win,” Rebel Coach Jerry Tarkanian said. “We didn’t rebound. If you don’t rebound, I don’t care what you’re doing defensively, you’re going to be in trouble.”

San Jose was led by 6-foot 8-inch guard Ricky Berry, who scored 22 points, 20 in the second half. He sat out most of the first half after picking up his third foul seven minutes into the game.

San Jose’s Reggie Owens grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds and scored 15 points.

Banks’ four three-point shots helped the Rebels to a 40-32 halftime lead.

Tarkanian blamed the Rebels’ poor rebounding on health problems, noting that center-forward Jarvis Basnight was sick before the game and that backup center David Willard was sidelined with a bad knee.

San Jose Coach Bill Berry said the Rebels showed why they’re ranked No. 1.

“Give Vegas a lot of credit,” he said. “They spurt when they have to, and I guess that’s what the great teams do.”

Kentucky 70, Alabama 69--Ed Davender scored 29 points (13 of 19 shots), including a 10-footer with six seconds left to lift the Wildcats to an upset win at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

“Alabama is still the best team in the league,” Kentucky Coach Eddie Sutton said. “I’m just proud of our guys for pulling out a win down here.”

Alabama held a 69-63 lead with less than two minutes left, but Kentucky scored the last seven points.
