Running back Rich Erenberg said the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6-10 last season, need to bring in some new faces and get rid of some old ones.

Erenberg said “it wouldn’t be real smart on my part” to identify the players he thinks should be let go.

“It wouldn’t look good to name names in the paper,” he said. “It wouldn’t be fair to my teammates either.”

Erenberg, a third-year pro, told the Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum, Pa., that his own role of reserve running back and third-down pass receiver isn’t secure for 1987.

“I think all of us have to work hard to keep our jobs,” Erenberg said. “Sometimes, fear of failure is the best motivator. If you’re worried about losing your job, you work extra hard. That’s what I’ve done every season. A lot of other guys will probably do the same thing this season.”

Their fans had a reason to gripe when the Steelers lost six of their first seven games following a series of crippling injuries, Erenberg said.
