IN RETIREMENT Jack Errion, Corona del Mar High School--The retired Sea King coach will be honored at a banquet tonight in the Corona del Mar gymnasium. Errion headed the Corona del Mar basketball program for 10 seasons, winning 199 games and six league titles. Before that, he spent 22 seasons at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach, beginning in 1954, and won 319 games. OUT OF RETIREMENT John Scott, University of San Diego--The all-Southeast football and basketball player is considering a return to athletic competition in the fall, according to the latest edition of “St. Paul Sports.” The publication, which tracks former St. Paul High School athletes, said Scott has not made up his mind which sport to play at USD. He is sitting out his freshman year in college. He earned all-Southeast basketball honors in 1985 and ’86 and a second-team football berth in 1985. R and R WEEK Southern Section CIF--The section office in Cerritos has designated next week as its second “R and R Week” of the school year. Schools other than those involved in post-season basketball or soccer action are forbidden to hold athletic activities, including team meetings or practices, during the period. Section administrators believe that periodic “R and R” weeks will foster better study habits by creating a rest period between athletic seasons. Schools have been encouraged to lock their gymnasiums and police their campus facilities to enforce the break. The CIF Southern Section has designated three “R and R” weeks during the school year. The first took place Nov. 3 to 8. Another will be May 18 to 23. FOOTBALL Alex Espinoza, Iowa State University--The quarterback on St. Paul High’s 1981 Southern Section Big Five championship team completed his college career with 5,307 yards passing. He was the starting quarterback for the Cyclones for the past three seasons. St. Paul was 14-0 when it won the Big Five title. BASKETBALL Cindy Vyskocil, Whittier Christian High School--Her 59 points in a game against Capistrano Valley High is tops in the state this season. It was the third time in two seasons that she has scored 50 or more points in a game. She leads the CIF Southern Section in scoring average at more than 33 points a game. Tony Farmer, Artesia High School--At least one Suburban League coach has been so impressed with Farmer’s skills that he plans to vote for Farmer as the league’s most valuable player. “He’s by far the best player in this league,” said the coach, Roger Williams of La Mirada High School. Cory Jennings, Norwalk High School--The 6-foot-4 center was scouted last week by Cerritos College basketball Coach Bob Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich hopes to lure the all-Suburban League player to the Falcon campus. Jennings averages 19 points and 12 rebounds a game. At 185 pounds, he uses his litheness and long arms to intimidate opposing players. Mike Goodcase, Whittier Christian High School--Carting a grade-point average of 4.0, the senior has been accepted at both Stanford University and UC Irvine. Though the 6-foot-2 swingman averages 15 points a game he may opt instead to play baseball in college, according to Herald Coach Bill Cuccia. Goodcase also is an accomplished defender who holds the school’s career basketball steal record. Corey Hoffert, California High School--The 49 points scored by the senior in his team’s 75-70 Whitmont League win over El Rancho High was a career high and highlighted a tremendous turnaround by the 6-foot-5 center. According to Condor Co-Coach Paul Turley, Hoffert was the 15th man four years ago on the school’s freshman team. “I saw some potential in him and he was willing to work on it,” Turley said. Hoffert has grown five inches since he entered the Whittier high school. Debbie DeLeon, Whitney High School--The senior guard scored 22 points last Friday against Cal Lutheran High School to become the first player in Whitney’s history to account for more than 1,000 points in a career. She entered the final week of the regular season with 1,011 points. Kevin Kurz, Citrus College--The All-Southeast player from Schurr High School in Montebello ranks seventh in the state in community college field goal percentage shooting. He is hitting 60% of his tries for the two-year college in Azusa. Andre Wiley of Compton College and Willie Joseph of Cerritos College are tied for 22nd place, hitting 57.4% of their field goals. Andy Olivarez, Cypress College--The former Whittier High School player, currently a sophomore starter at Cypress, is the leading scorer in the Orange Empire Conference. He is averaging 25.2 points a game. Bridgette Frazier, Cerritos College--The sophomore recently set a Falcon record for most rebounds in a career. Willie Joseph, Cerritos College--The All-Southeast player from Lynwood High School is expected to set a Falcon record for most points scored in a season. With four games remaining in the regular season, Joseph needs 85 points to reach the mark. He is averaging 23.1 points a game. Cerritos College--The women’s basketball team ranks eighth in the state in defense. The Lady Falcons have held their opponents to an average of 53.8 points a game. Mary Beth Nelson, Biola University--The 6-foot-3 freshman center has been honored twice this season as the NAIA District III player of the week. The most recent award came after Nelson scored 43 points and pulled in 38 rebounds in back-to-back wins over Cal Baptist (75-66) and Whitworth College (66-57). Her 26 rebounds against Whitworth tied a school record. BASEBALL John Gonsalves, Cal State Long Beach--The 49er coach won his 200th career game last week with a 9-5 decision over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Gonsalves is in his 18th year at the school and has coached in more than 1,000 games. Mike Kelly, Cal State Long Beach--The freshman catcher made his first college at-bat a big one, slamming a solo homer in the 49ers’ 5-4 loss to the University of San Diego last week. Cypress College--Six former Southeast/Long Beach prep athletes will play for the Chargers this season. They arepitchers Kevin Gail (Millikan), Lee Moore (California) and Kurt Stewart (St. John Bosco), infielders Tony Mendoza (Cerritos) and Kent Hobbensiefken (Warren), and outfielder Steve Balstad (St. John Bosco). Moore and Stewart are sophomores at the college. QUOTE OF THE WEEK Father Robert Gallagher, St. Paul High School--In his first printed comments since he fired football Coach Rick Ready last month, the first-year principal explained in “St. Paul Sports” a portion of the philosophy that led him to make the change: “It is not the business of the coach to alienate every person involved with the school in order to call the year a success. Winning is great. In a Catholic high school it certainly can’t be considered the sole criteria for success.”
