A newborn girl with a fractured skull was abandoned in a soiled paper bag in an area between Nob Hill and Russian Hill, and the San Francisco neighborhood was quickly blanketed with leaflets in hopes of finding the mother. The girl, found on the sidewalk by passers-by, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she was in stable condition. Police said the infant was dirty and cold when found, wearing pajamas and wrapped in a woman’s sweater and baby blanket. Juvenile Inspector Jim Hampton said police had no witnesses and could not determine how the baby was hurt. Residents in the Washington-and-Hyde neighborhood where the girl was found were interviewed. Hampton said there have been no reported child-abandonment cases in the city in several years. He said that if the mother is not found, the child will become a ward of the court and placed for adoption.
