Marie Otto, superintendent of the 17,500-student Huntington Beach Union High School District since 1984, confirmed Wednesday that she will retire, effective in January.

“My husband has been retired seven years, and I want to join him so we can have some good years together visiting our children and grandchildren,” said Otto, 57. “I’ll certainly miss this school district, though, because I’ve spent so many years here.”

Otto’s contract expires in 1989. “I had to ask the board to let me leave early. I’ve also recommended, and the board has agreed, that a search be begun immediately for a new superintendent so that a replacement can come in by next fall,” she said.

The district governs public high schools in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.

Otto first began work in the district in 1969, as a school psychologist. She subsequently became director of pupil personnel services and an assistant superintendent. She became the superintendent in August, 1984.
