An agent for Phoenix Sun rookie center William Bedford said local police and a Maricopa County grand jury are trying to “smear” the NBA team by questioning players about alleged drug use.

“Some people are going out to smear the Suns,” said William Merriweather, one of Bedford’s three agents. “I haven’t heard about the feds being involved in this (investigation). Do some local people have it in for someone? All you need to get a grand jury is a prosecutor. They’re putting a lot of people through unnecessary things.

“If they don’t want the Suns to play basketball in Phoenix, why don’t they just say so?”

Merriweather confirmed that Bedford will testify before the grand jury, which is investigating possible drug use by several current and former Suns. He said that Bedford and a local attorney met with officials from the county attorney’s office last week to discuss Bedford’s grand jury appearance.
