Nanette O’Neill of Studio City has been named Valley Woman 1987 by the Merchants Assn. of the Sherman Oaks Galleria. O’Neill teaches English as a second language at Pacoima School, a center for children with learning problems. She is a member of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce and has been active in the Animal Alliance and the Los Angeles school district’s Senior High School Options program. The award is designed to honor women who “best represent the Valley.”

Ada Beth Lee of Tarzana, a co-founder of the Valley Master Chorale, has been elected president of the Valley Cultural Center. Lee, a professional singer, musician and composer, joined the center in 1977, and served as president of the center’s Affiliates in 1978. Along with continuing the “Summer Concert in the Park” concert series, Lee hopes to increase interest in the arts among school-age children and expand programs and facilities for the performing arts.

“Flying Into Action With Rotary” was the theme for the 1987 Rotary District 526 Seminar earlier this month, a training program for its officers. Newly elected presidents included: Andy Sauer, Burbank Rotary; Mervin Hoffman, Burbank-Glendale Rotary; Ed Moreno, Canoga Park Rotary; Bill Hogrefe, Canyon Country Rotary; Gordon Foote, Chatsworth Rotary; Edward J. Jeanne Davis of Northridge received the Award for Civic and Cultural Advancement at the Hilltoppers Auxiliary’s 31st annual Hourglass Awards. Davis is a member of the Northridge Coordinating Council and the Northridge Cultural, Historical and Arts Society. Cris Hewitt of Studio City received the Philanthropic Service Award. She has served on the board of directors of the Hathaway Home for Children since 1951 and is now chairman of the San Fernando Valley Child Care Resource Center. The Hourglass Youth Award was presented to Carolyn Jane Ronning, a senior at La Canada High School. Funds raised from the awards luncheon will go toward Hilltoppers’ Philanthropy, a Volunteer Center in Van Nuys.

Florence Huskins of Van Nuys has been selected the winner of the American Assn. of Retired Persons National Elderhostel Award. Huskins has worked for the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop and the Church of the Chimes in Sherman Oaks. She is an active member of the Van Nuys chapter of AARP. As a recipient of the award, Huskins will visit an Elderhostel, a program designed for persons over 60 that provides the opportunity to live in a college dormitory and study. There are over 800 Elderhostels on campuses throughout the country.

Howard R. Green was installed as president of the Granada Hills Community Hospital Foundation at its luncheon banquet Wednesday. Also sworn in were Al Sherman, first vice president; Lloyd Boland, second vice president; Darlene McPherson, secretary, and Richard Yeakel, treasurer. Past President Paula Boland and Vice President Myrna Bennett were honored for their service.
