Northridge Slams Past Chapman for 9-1 Victory

Catcher Scott McIntyre hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and left-hander John LaRosa pitched a five-hitter to give Cal State Northridge a 9-1 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory over Chapman at Hart Park Friday.

McIntyre gave Northridge a 4-0 lead in the second with a two-out grand slam off Steve Dunn (4-2). He also drove in a run with a sixth-inning single.

LaRosa, a junior, struck out 11 and walked five. He lost his shutout in the eighth, when Bryan Beals led off with a double and Bucky Bollinger singled to drive him in.

First baseman John Balfanz was 3 for 5 with two runs batted in for Cal State Northridge (11-7, 27-15). Jim Areias was 2 for 3 for Chapman (8-7, 20-20).

Chapman outfielder Darren Nelson’s 21-game hitting streak ended. He went 0 for 3 with a walk.
