Share

Three of the nation’s most promising collegiate sprinters, Joe DeLoach of Houston and Henry Thomas and Mike Marsh of UCLA, will compete in a dual meet today at Drake Stadium.

The combined men’s and women’s meet will start at 11 a.m. with women’s field events. Men’s field events will begin at 1 p.m.

DeLoach, a sophomore who was ineligible last year, has personal best times of 10.21 seconds in the 100 meters and 20.24 in the 200. He recorded his 200 time in 1985 at the ARC0 Invitational meet at the Coliseum as a high school senior.

Thomas, also a sophomore, was bothered by nagging injuries last year. He’s fit now and has personal best times of 10.25 in the 100 and 20.49 in the 200.

Marsh, another sophomore, is the Pacific 10’s 100-meter defending champion. He has a best time of 10.22.

DeLoach, Thomas and SMU’s Roy Martin were regarded as the country’s best prep sprinters two years ago.

Some world-class unattached athletes will also compete today at Westwood, among them shotputter John Brenner, British javelin record-holder Roald Bradstock and high jumper Dwight Stones.

In other track and field activity, USC’s men’s team will take part in the Bruce Jenner Invitational meet today at San Jose.
