Animal lovers said they will apply for permits to hunt mountain lions--in the hope of saving as many lions as possible. The state Fish and Game Commission has approved a 79-day hunt for the lions in Northern California, but only 190 permits will be issued by lottery. Spokespersons for Earth First, Action for Animals and the Sea Shepherd Society said animal lovers who win licenses would not use them, and can thus claim to have saved the life of one cougar for one year. Terry Mansfield, head of the Department of Fish and Game wildlife management division, said the state has no objections. “It’s sure to generate more revenue for lion research,” Mansfield said.
