FIRST OFF . . .
Are they or aren’t they? The three remaining Beatles--Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr--were the subject of a slew of unconfirmed reports zipping around London Wednesday concerning a recording and concert Beatles reunion. In a story published today, Britain’s Today newspaper reported that “several sources close to McCartney and Harrison” said the Fab Three had recorded several tracks together at Harrison’s home studio near London. Instead of Julian Lennon, son of slain Beatle John Lennon, former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne--who’s producing Harrison’s coming solo LP--subbed for Lennon. In addition, Today reported that the sources said the three might appear live together (with Lynne) at the Prince’s Trust Concerts at Wembley Stadium on June 5. Disc jockeys at BBC Radio and elsewhere announced over the air Wednesday their “substantially similar” versions of the reunion story, said a Today staffer. McCartney’s press agent in London said the Today story was “just a repetition of old rumors” but did not deny the report. Warner Bros. Records, which will release Harrison’s LP later this year, had no comment.
