Muir One of Favorites in CIF Masters After Winning the 4-A Track Crown

After winning its first CIF Southern Section 4-A Division title since 1982, the Muir High boys track team will be well represented at the CIF Masters Meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

The Mustangs, who unseated three-time and defending 4-A champion Hawthorne, have six individuals and both of their relay teams competing in the meet, led by sprinter Corey Ealy.

Ealy, a senior, turned in two of the fastest times in the state this season when he won the 100-meter dash in 10.36 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 20.80. He also runs for Muir’s relay teams which posted swift times of 41.32 in the 400 meters and 3:15.81 in the 1,600.

Muir has strong contenders in the triple jump with Chris Perry and the 800-meter run with Marcus Robertson. Perry, a sophomore, was the top qualifier in the triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 48-5, and Robertson had the second-fastest time of 1:53.29 in the 800 meters.

Among the top challengers to Ealy in the sprints are seniors Martin Cannady of Duarte and Ervie Barnes of Monrovia.

Cannady, who led Duarte to its first 3-A championship, won the 100 and 200 meters in 3-A last week. Cannady won the 100 meters in 10.63 and the 200 in 21.62 and anchors Duarte’s swift 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Barnes qualified for the 100 in 10.62 and 200 in 21.59.

Other San Gabriel Valley boys in two events are Dana Hall of Ganesha and Mark Crear of Rowland in the 110 high hurdles and 300 lows, Rick Fuller of Arroyo in the shot put and discus and Steve Provenzano of Arcadia in the 200 and 400 meters. Rosemead’s Aaron Mascorro is the fastest qualifier in the 3,200 meters with a 9:10.22 in the 3-A finals.

The top individual among valley girls is Pomona’s Janeene Vickers, who almost single-handedly led the Red Devils to third place in 3-A last week.

Vickers, a senior who will attend UCLA next, won the 100 meters, 100 and 300 hurdles and anchored Pomona’s winning 400-meter relay team in the 3-A finals.

She will receive strong competition from another valley standout, LaShawn Simmons of El Monte, in the 100 meters and 100 hurdles. Simmons finished second to Vickers in both events at the 3-A finals and also won the long jump with a leap of 19-0.

Another top contender is Mountain View’s Tracy Williams in the 1,600 and 3,200. Williams, among the premier distance runners in the state, posted a fast 4:56.80 in the 1,600 meters and a 3-A record of 10:33.01 in the 3,200.

Muir will also compete in three events led by sprinter Stacie Moore. The freshman qualified for the 400 meters in 56.37 seconds and runs for the 400 and 1,600 relay teams. The other Muir qualifier is Leslie Allen in the 300 hurdles.

Two other valley standouts in the meet are Lisa Vanderburg of Walnut in the 300 hurdles and Reneeka Williams of Nogales, who set a 3-A record with her 136-3 in the discus.

Pitcher Charlie Webb of Cal Poly Pomona, who set an NCAA Division II record with 15 consecutive complete games this season, has been named to the division’s second team All-American baseball team.

Webb, a senior from Riverside, posted a 12-6 record and 2.64 earned-run average and completed 16 of 17 starts to lead the Broncos to third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Webb, named co-pitcher of the year in the CCAA, also was named Pomona’s most valuable player and selected to the All-NCAA Division II West District first team.

Three other Broncos were named to the district team: Junior outfielder Keith Barrett, a former Royal Oak High standout who batted .274 with 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in, was selected to the second team, and first baseman Tom Weeks and second baseman Dave Hajek made the third team.

Weeks, a senior, hit .320 with 11 homers and 58 RBI. Hajek, a sophomore, was the team’s top hitter at .353.

Two players from Cal State Los Angeles have been named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball team.

Utility player Shaun Doyle, a junior who starred at Diamond Bar High, was a first-team selection, and infielder Mica Lewis, a sophomore from Westchester, made the second team.

Doyle was the top hitter for the Golden Eagles with a .364 average and also led the team with 71 hits, 16 doubles and 49 runs batted in and added 8 home runs and 17 stolen bases. He is second on his school’s career list in hits with 178 and runs batted in with 112.

Lewis, a shortstop, batted .332 and led the Golden Eagles with 23 stolen bases and 57 runs.

Cal Poly Pomona’s Alison Stowell, who led her team to the NCAA playoffs for the sixth straight year, has been named to the NCAA Division I women’s softball team for the third straight season.

Stowell, a junior from Walnut High, was named to the second team as a center fielder. She made the second team at right field as a freshman and the first team at second base as a sophomore.

Stowell was the team’s top hitter with a .317 average and led the Broncos with 63 hits in 65 games, 37 runs scored and a 46% on-base percentage.

Top amateur boxers from Southern California and Nevada will compete in the Junior Olympic Boxing Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Azusa VFW Hall, 250 1st St.

Bouts start at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday. Winners advance to the national tournament in June in Michigan.

The host Azusa Youth Boxing Club will be represented by Leonel Rodriguez in the 95-pound division, Johnny Chavez at 132, Leroy Vigil at 139 and Jerry Moran at 165.

Rodriguez was the 1986 Southern California Police Athletic League champion in his division, Chavez and Moran are ranked No. 1 in Southern California and Vigil No. 2.

Citrus College baseball coach Skip Claprood will coach a team of college players that will compete in France and Holland for two weeks starting Saturday.

“We will train with the French National Team and scrimmage with them for seven days in Paris,” Claprood said. “We are scheduled to play the Dutch National Team at least twice in Amsterdam.”

Claprood will coach the 15 players with Tony Barbone, coach of Azusa Pacific University, and former Citrus assistant coach Gary Henderson.

Among the players are nine from Citrus: Mike Edwards, Paul Potvin, Todd Bell, Henry Montano, Todd Patino, Al Salgado, Jon Murphy, John Sutton and Tony Aguirre.
