The State : Feinstein Pushes Budget
A record $1.95-billion city budget was proposed by San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein, who included pay raises for women and minority city employees as well as a 33% increase in the amount being spent to combat acquired immunity deficiency syndrome. The proposed 1987-88 budget submitted to the Board of Supervisors would be up 3.5% from this fiscal year and calls for fee increases at city recreational facilities, a boost in the price of monthly Municipal Railway passes and some transit cutbacks. The budget, which would appropriate $17.2 million for 22 new or expanded AIDS-care programs, was immediately criticized because it would wipe out the city’s $7.5-million emergency cash reserve.
