The New York City Sports Commission said it will seek to have the 1988 Olympic Games contested in the New York-New Jersey area if political unrest in South Korea prevents Seoul from serving as host. Los Angeles, Indianapolis and West Berlin have made similar proposals.

Peter Vallone, the City Council majority leader, said there were plenty of facilities available. He mentioned Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Randalls Island Stadium and Central Park in New York, and the Meadowlands sports complex in nearby New Jersey, along with several universities with gym facilities.
