Martina Navratilova, hampered by a sprained ankle suffered while playing basketball at her home in Fort Worth, Tex., has been removed from the U.S. Federation Cup squad.

“Martina Navratilova’s injury has not responded to treatment quickly enough, and she will be replaced by Elise Burgin,” spokesman Henry Wancke said.

The Americans begin play Tuesday when they face Japan.
