$20,000 Donation for Quake Preparedness, Relief

Share

Dea Fluor has contributed $20,000 for earthquake preparedness and relief, the Orange County chapter of the Red Cross announced Friday.

Fluor, widow of Fred C. Fluor, a founder of the Irvine engineering firm, devoted $15,000 of the gift to help buy and install an emergency generator on the grounds of the Red Cross in Santa Ana, according to spokeswoman Barbara Lohman. The rest of the money will be for victims of the Whittier earthquake.

“Our concern is to be prepared to provide services here in Orange County in case we have a quake like Whittier’s, or worse,” Lohman said. She had no estimate of how much it will cost to buy the generator and install it in a specially built container. Its primary function will be to permit emergency radio communication from the field.

Lohman said Fluor’s gift is the largest made by an individual so far in the county for quake relief. About $10,000 has been given, she said, with discussions of in-kind gifts under way between the chapter and Builders Emporium and the Lucky supermarket chains.
