Bolsa Grande High School scored 25 second-half points to break open a close game and remain undefeated, beating Santiago, 39-7, at Garden Grove High School Friday.

Ricky Lepule led the Matadors’ attack, rushing for 142 yards in 14 carries and scoring 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Damon Fisher added 2 touchdown runs of 18 yards and 1 yard, and also threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Eric Shimamura in the third quarter.

A late, two-yard touchdown run by Lepule sparked a heated exchange at midfield after the game, in which Santiago Coach Mike Barron accused Bolsa Grande’s Greg Shadid of running up the score.

“I have never run the score up on anyone, and I’m mad that anyone would think I did,” Shadid said following the incident. Barron declined to comment afterward.

Shadid pointed out that Bolsa Grande (7-0, 4-0) had only four running backs listed on their roster. All saw action in the game.

Santiago (2-4-1, 0-3-1) held the potent Matador attack in check through the first half, but hurt themselves by twice failing to score after advancing inside Bolsa Grande’s 20-yard line.

Cavalier quarterback Dana Ripley threw a 10-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Paul Gregerson to avoid a shutout.

Bolsa’s other running back, Travin Lui, rushed for 70 yards in 13 carries and scored the Matadors’ other touchdown on a two-yard run in the second quarter.
