Taxi to Huatulco

Share

Just finished Jerry Hulse’s article about (Santa Cruz) Huatulco and Puerto Escondido (Nov. 8). We visited both places last February. We stayed at the Santa Fe Hotel and got to know Paul Cleaver quite well, staying in half of the “owner’s house” up on the hill. Pretty secluded.

At Paul’s insistence we went up to the main road and for 75 cents caught a bus. When the bus ran out of gas we caught a taxi to Huatulco. At the main village on the beach we saw the beginnings of the port for the cruise ships--pilings going in, but still some lovely photos. The taxi driver showed us the new town, just streets at that point, and the airport. If nothing else, there will be a nice stiff taxi fare into town. It’s a ways out there!

One thing Jerry didn’t mention about Puerto Escondido is the “new town” up above the highway. What a difference. I assume that’s where the people moved when the tourists took over their beach. Looked like a rich man’s Tijuana! Glad he shared his experiences with us, and that he keeps up the good and interesting work.
