AND WHILE WE’RE ON THAT SUBJECT: How did Z-Rock’s heavy-metal fans react to the station’s switch to New Age? Just about as angrily as KMET diehards did. In fact, Z-Rock staffer Guy Giuliano, who stayed on at the soothing new WTWV, oversaw a letter-writing campaign designed to persuade station owners to switch back to metal--a campaign that got lots of local press but, according to a piece in the Chicago Tribune, also got Giuliano fired. Here’s a few excerpts from Giuliano’s unhappy headbanger correspondents:

“New Age . . . is elevator music that Amnesty International would outlaw as being severe aural torture”--Nancy J. Mainl.

“I beg you to save our sanity”--Gil Donar (on behalf of the Cicero Detention Bums).

“Metal isn’t just some chords slapped together. It’s very intricate classical music--Paganini, Bach, Beethoven etc.--combined with blues”--Koni Shaughnessy.

“My life is over, life has no meaning. How will I wake up in the morning without some thrash band screaming obscenities in my ear?”--Tracy Buesing.
