Eight inmates at the County Jail in Chula Vista were sent to local hospitals with injuries after a fight broke out shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.

The fight was quickly quelled and no sheriff’s deputies were injured, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Nevells, the jail watch commander.

No weapons were found and the cause of the fight is under investigation, Nevells said. Other inmates were locked in their cells to prevent further trouble.

Three injured inmates were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, two to Physicians & Surgeons Hospital in Southeast San Diego, and three to Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista.

Seven were listed as having received mild to moderate injuries, and one of those taken to UCSD Medical Center was listed as acutely but not seriously injured, according to Hartson Medical Service.

Spokeswomen at Physicians & Surgeons and Scripps Memorial said the inmates were treated for cuts and bruises and scheduled to be returned to the jail by this morning.
