Sjoberg Unable to Regain Indoor Record but Wins High Jump at 7-10

Patrik Sjoberg of Sweden cleared 7 feet 10 inches and won a controversial high jump competition in the European Indoor Track and Field Championships at Budapest, Hungary, Saturday, the opening day of the two-day meet.

West Germany’s Carlo Thranhardt, who took away the Swede’s world indoor record two weeks ago with a jump of 7-11, finished third at 7-8 1/2.

Toward the end of the event, Thranhardt was warned for taking longer than the permitted 30 seconds, and had to forfeit a jump.

He stalked out of the arena in disgust, arguing that his concentration had been disturbed by a race on the track, but later agreed to return.

Sjoberg, who originally was to miss the meet because of an ankle injury, attempted 7-11 1/2 and just clipped the bar on his last try.

Olympic champion Dietmar Mogenburg of West Germany took second with a jump of 7-9.
