Surgidev Corp. of Goleta, Calif., laid off 150 workers, more than half its work force, after telling doctors across the country to stop using the artificial eye lenses it manufactures for implant in cataract surgery. The company’s move was voluntary, but it came after the Food and Drug Administration noted deficiencies in the firm’s record keeping, officials said. An FDA spokesman said there have been no reports that the lenses have caused problems following cataract surgery. Industry estimates put the number of Surgidev lenses implanted each year at about 50,000.
