Local News in Brief : Vietnamese Gets 1 Year in Jail in June Robbery
A20-year-old Vietnamese man was sentenced Monday to a year in County Jail in a Reseda robbery that occurred during a wave of San Fernando Valley thefts in which Asians were both perpetrators and victims, authorities said.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Paul Turner sentenced Hoang Van Cao of Los Angeles to three years on probation, with the first year to be served in County Jail, a court spokesman said. Cao pleaded no contest earlier this month to a robbery charge.
The charge stemmed from a June 4 robbery in which Cao, who was armed with a knife, and two other men burst into the home of a Vietnamese man and stole jewelry and cameras, authorities said. Only Cao was arrested.
The robbery was one of several instances of Vietnamese gangs preying on members of the Valley Asian community, authorities said. The incidents resulted in the arrests of several suspected gang members.
