THE PREPS : Softball : Ocean View Defeats Edison in 13 Innings, 3-1

Ocean View High School scored two runs in the 13th inning to defeat Edison High School, 3-1, in a Sunset League softball game Friday at the Edison Community Center.

Amy Tucker hit a two-out single off Edison’s Terry Carpenter in the 13th inning. Freshman Jenifer Kimble then hit a grounder to Carpenter, who threw it over first base and into right field, allowing Tucker to score and Kimble to reach third base. Marla Pickard singled to drive in Kimble for Ocean View (11-9, 2-1).

Edison (12-5, 2-1) had chances to win in the 11th and 12th innings. In the 11th, Pickard (3-0) got Michelle Asada to ground out with the bases loaded and two out.

In the 12th, Cindy Schneller threw Kim Jones out at the plate when Jones tried to score after Schneller had made a fielding error on the play.

Edison had played to a scoreless tie against Fountain Valley in 20 innings on Tuesday.

In another Sunset League game:

Fountain Valley 1, Westminster 0--Rae Rice threw her second no-hitter to lead host Fountain Valley (17-4, 3-0). Tina Wey had an RBI single in the third.

In the Sea View League:

University 10, Corona del Mar 0--Shareen Patton (9-4) threw a one-hitter for host University (9-5, 7-1). University scored its runs on 2 hits, 11 walks and 5 errors. Corona del Mar is 1-7 in league play.

Tustin 3, Estancia 0--Tanya McGuire hit a two-run pinch double in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead Tustin (11-3, 8-0). Shannon Ellis (4-1) pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Estancia is 5-3 in league play.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 9, Dana Hills 3--Michelle Shean had two hits, including a three-run home run, to lead host San Clemente (12-6, 2-1). Wendy Stewart was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and scored 3 runs.

Mission Viejo 1, Capistrano Valley 0 (8 innings)--Jenny Heydt (7-0) threw a one-hitter to lead host Mission Viejo. Debbie Lobato’s eighth-inning single with the bases loaded gave Mission Viejo (14-4, 3-0) the victory.

El Toro 3, Irvine 1--Jennifer Jourden (6-2) allowed five hits for El Toro (14-7, 1-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 3, Valencia 0--Kelley Cook (11-3) threw a one-hitter, striking out 16, for Brea-Olinda (12-3, 2-1) at Kramer Junior High school. Brea took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a squeeze bunt by Bonnie Dunas. The Wildcats added two unearned runs in the third. Michele Granger (14-3) threw a three-hitter, striking out 12, for Valencia (15-5, 2-2).
