Five finalists have been named to succeed Stephen Horn, the former president of Cal State Long Beach, who left office under pressure in February.

They are Thomas Wallace, chancellor of Purdue University; John Brazil, president of Southeastern Massachusetts University; Curtis McCray, president of the University of North Florida; Sherry Penney, vice chancellor for academic programs, policy and planning at the State University of New York in Albany, and John Beljan, vice president for academic affairs at CSULB.

According to Cal State spokesman Jeff Stetson, the finalists will begin visiting the Long Beach campus on May 9 for meetings with faculty members, students, staff and alumni. The new president is expected to be named at the Board of Trustees meeting May 17.

Horn, who had been president for 17 years, was forced to resign following a series of problems on the campus beginning with the 1986 discovery of an unexpected deficit of more than $1 million. He has since announced his candidacy for the congressional seat formerly occupied by Daniel E. Lungren, the governor’s appointee for state treasurer.
