POLITICS 88 : CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dukakis Leads in Poll

Share

Dukakis maintains a substantial lead among Democrats nationwide--66% to 22%--over Jackson as the top choice for the nomination, according to a Gallup poll for release today.

As found in earlier national polls, Dukakis’ support tends to be weaker than Jackson’s: Currently, one-third of Dukakis’ support is considered strong while two-thirds of Jackson’s support is firm.

In hypothetical test elections pitting Republican front-runner George Bush against the two leading Democratic contenders, Gallup found Bush and Dukakis to be in a statistical tie--45% vs. 43% respectively--while Bush would win handily over Jackson--60% vs. 25%--if the election were held today.

In a test of how Jackson’s presence might affect Dukakis’ chances against Bush, Gallup matched a Dukakis/Jackson ticket against Bush and Rep. Jack Kemp of New York. In that scenario, Bush beats Dukakis 50% to 40%.
