Olympic Water Polo Rematch Tonight

The United States men’s water polo team will meet top-ranked Yugoslavia in an exhibition match tonight at UC San Diego’s Canyonview Pool at 7:30 p.m.

Yugoslavia defeated the United States in the final of the 1984 Olympic Games to win the gold medal.

The teams are playing a six-match series in California. The U.S. team, ranked third in the world, won the first three matches, 11-10, 6-5 and 9-6. The 9-6 victory was Tuesday night in Newport Beach.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

DIVING

Kristen Walls and Erin Hoese have been named high school girls’ All-Americans by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Assn. of America.

Walls, from Monte Vista High School, and Hoese, from Point Loma, will be seniors this fall. Of the 30 divers earning All-American status, three were from California, and seven were high school juniors.

Walls won the San Diego Section title and Hoese finished second.

BOXING

James Davis and Sean Fletcher of San Diego were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Boxing trials at Concord, Calif.

Fletcher lost a 3-2 decision to Jemal Ninton of New Carrollton, Md., at 119 pounds and Davis was defeated, 5-0, by James Harris of Washington, D.C., at 106.
