The 1958 Newport Jazz Festival was one of the most memorable gatherings of the modern jazz era, with such pure jazz greats as Thelonius Monk and Louis Armstrong performing on the same program with crossover rock ‘n’ roller Chuck Berry and soul singer Mahalia Jackson. That concert was preserved as a documentary film titled “Jazz on a Summer’s Day,” and tonight, San Diego jazz fans will have a rare opportunity to see it on the big screen. “Jazz on a Summer’s Day” is playing at the California Theatre on a one-night-only double bill with “ ‘Round Midnight,” French director Bertrand Tavernier’s acclaimed 1986 drama about American jazz musicians in Paris. Showtime is 8 p.m.
