Law enforcement and community leaders announced their support Monday for a bill that would provide $2.5 million to Los Angeles County education officials for anti-gang programs and related activities in “at risk” elementary and junior high schools.

Among those pledging their support for the bill at the Los Angeles press conference were Cmdr. Ernie Curstinger, head of the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Bureau; Mark Ridley-Thomas, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; Steve Valdivia, executive director of Community Youth Gang Services, and Miguel Duron, an anti-gang specialist with the county Probation Department.

The bill sponsored by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sepulveda) would fund counseling for students and parents, sports and cultural activities, and job training.
