Tennis Roundup : Lendl, Agassi Win in Vermont
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl and second-seeded Andre Agassi advanced Tuesday to the second round of the Volvo International tennis tournament at Stratton Mountain, Vt.
Lendl, of Czechoslovakia, defeated Christian Saceanu, 6-4, 6-4, and Agassi, the top-ranked American player, struggled past Paul Wekesa of Kenya, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Agassi, who played for the United States in its Davis Cup match in Argentina last weekend, was ahead, 5-2, in the third set when rain suspended play for one hour. Agassi, 18, won the match two games later when Wekesa hit a ball long.
Second-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the $150,000 Netherlands Nabisco Grand Prix tennis tournament at Hilversum, Netherlands.
Third-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria beat France’s Thierry Champion, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round of the $245,000 Grand Prix Passing Shot tournament at Bordeaux, France.
