John Frey and Norm Alvis easily outdistanced the field Tuesday, clinching berths on the U.S. Olympic Cycling team in the two-man 50-kilometer race.

In women’s racing, Phyllis Hines teamed with Jeanne Golay to win the 25K race and berths on the team that will compete in the World Championships in Belgium later this year.

Frey, from Albuquerque, N. M., and Alvis, from Sacramento, finished the two-man event in 1:03:40.59, more than a minute ahead of the nearest challengers.

Andy Paulin and Tony Palmer, who finished second, each had raced poorly in solo performances Saturday in the 40K national championships and were advised by the coaching staff to take Tuesday off to rest for four-man races Thursday. Instead, they also qualified for slots on the Olympic team.

Paulin and Palmer clocked 1:03:57.59, edging Kent Bostick and Mark Waite, third-place finishers at 1:03.59.

Hines and Golay ran the course in 33:47.26, just three seconds ahead of Jane Marshall, of Albuquerque and Leslie Shenk of Cincinnati, who finished second, also qualifying for the World Championships team.
