Local News in Brief : Drug Firm to Pay Fine of $250,000

A South El Monte drug manufacturer has agreed to pay a $250,000 fine and to comply with federal law requiring strict record keeping on sales of its products, officials said Wednesday.

The civil suit brought by the U.S. attorney’s office and the Drug Enforcement Administration charged that International Medication Systems Ltd. committed a number of violations between November, 1986, and October, 1987.

The alleged violations included failure to ask whether recipients of controlled substances were registered to handle them; failure to state on invoices the names of people to whom products were sent; failure to maintain a system that would reveal unusually large or frequent orders; and failure to comply with other record-keeping requirements.

The judgment was not to be considered an admission by the company that the violations occurred, or that it is liable for them, officials said.
