Arson Fire Destroys 3 Businesses, Damages 2
An arsonist ignited a fire that spread through a Chatsworth shopping plaza Wednesday, destroying three businesses and damaging two others, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.
The 3 a.m. fire was started in the Chalern Thai restaurant in the 9800 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and quickly spread to businesses adjoining it in the L-shaped, corner shopping plaza, Inspector Ed Reed said. The fire took 40 minutes to extinguish and required 11 engine companies, officials said.
The fire caused an estimated $255,000 in damages, gutting the restaurant, a pizza shop and a dry-cleaning shop and partially destroying a sandwich shop and a beauty supplies store, Reed said.
