Tennis Roundup : Lendl, Graf Top-Seeded Players for the U.S. Open

Ivan Lendl and Steffi Graf drew the top seedings Wednesday for the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, which begin Monday in New York.

Lendl was seeded first among men for the third straight year. Graf, a West German who can win tennis’ Grand Slam with the U.S. Open title, was top-seeded among the women for the second straight year.

The top 16 players in both brackets were seeded according to the international computer rankings.

The rest of the seeded men were No. 2 Mats Wilander of Sweden, No. 3 Stefan Edberg of Sweden, No. 4 Andre Agassi, No. 5 Boris Becker of West Germany, No. 6 Jimmy Connors, No. 7 Yannick Noah of France, No. 8 Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, No. 9 Tim Mayotte, No. 10 Henri Leconte of France, No. 11 Brad Gilbert, No. 12 Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, No. 13 Jonas B. Svensson of Sweden, No. 14 Andres Gomez, No. 15 Anders Jarryd of Sweden and No. 16 John McEnroe.

The women seeded behind Graf were No. 2 Martina Navratilova, No. 3 Chris Evert, No. 4 Pam Shriver, No. 5 Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, No. 6 Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, No. 7 Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, No. 8 Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union, No. 9 Lori McNeil, No. 10 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, No. 11 Zina Garrison, No. 12 Barbara Potter, No. 13 Mary Joe Fernandez, No. 14 Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, No. 15 Sylvia Hanika of West Germany and No. 16 Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union.

Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden upset second-seeded, defending champion Manuela Maleeva, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the United Jersey Bank tournament at Mahwah, N.J.

In other second-round matches, Graf needed only 44 minutes to trounce 16-year-old Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-0; third-seeded Sukova downed Isabelle Demongeot of France, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 6-seeded Hanika ousted Australia’s Diane Balestrat, 6-4, 6-2.

In a first-round match, fifth-seeded Katerina Maleeva downed Gigi Fernandez of Puerto Rico, 6-4, 6-2.

Lendl beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-3 to gain the second round of the $190,000 Norstar Hamlet Challenge Cup at Jericho, N.Y.

A first-round match between Noah and Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia was postponed by rain with Noah leading, 6-3, 6-7, 2-1, and will be completed today. Amos Mansdorf of Israel beat Aaron Krickstein, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
