West Hollywood : Trees OKd as AIDS Memorial
City officials have approved in concept a plan for a small grove of liquidambar trees in soon-to-be-renovated William S. Hart Park as a memorial to people who have died of AIDS.
The grove is to surround a small amphitheater and will be marked with an inscription, city officials said. The park, 8341 De Longpre Ave., is the former estate of silent screen cowboy star William S. Hart.
An ambitious plan for a monument in West Hollywood to honor those who have died of AIDS collapsed last month because of public opposition.
Critics of the proposal to raise an estimated $120,000 to $160,000 from private sources for the monument argued that the money could be better spent helping those afflicted with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
The idea of planting a “living memorial” as part of the park renovation gained rapid acceptance from the Fine Arts Advisory Board and two city commissions.
